Group 1’s chat

I thought that all the chats made good points and brought up interesting topics. But one specific thing i liked a lot….

11:16 AM: pennyp: We are only stealing if we don’t have permision. But from what I’ve seen there are sites like darcy said tht make you pay. Any way who wants to go out and buy a ten/ twenty year old album. In those cases it should be free. I can go to the library and get for free.

- I completely agree with this statement. If you can go to the library and get it for free, then why can’t you just download it for free. I also feel that there is no point in buying an album if you only like one song on it. Downloading music should be okay. The artists of the songs already have a lot of money from music videos, t.v. shows, or concerts. Downloading a few songs isnt going to hurt any of them too badly. Once people download one or two songs from the album they can see if they like it and then go and buy th cd. Usually if a person knows they like an artist they will just go buy the cd and not spend all their time downloading the entire album.

response to chats

Lara Skolnik

Something i read in group 2’s chat really stood out to me.  someone compared stealing a research paper and stealing music from a site like napster by saying “i think there is a difference between stealing music and stealing papers…. both are forms of expression, but when others steal papers, hey are passing it off as their own.”  I never thought of it this way, and now that i do think about it, i see how different the two situations are.  I beleive that when a paper is plagarized, the author would get mad because they are not getting credit for their work. However, when music is “stolen”, the artist is not getting money for his work. it all depends on the popularity of the person who created the work, whether it is music or literature.  No one is going to try to pass off a piece by a popular, well known author or a song by a well known band as their own.  So if someone “steals” their work and tries to pass it off as their own, the creater would most likely be concerned with being paid than that someone is getting credit for something they did not make.  However, if the creator is less known, they are most likely concerned with gaining popularity, therefore tehy want to get credit for their work whenever it is used, instead of someone who “steals” it getting credit.

Dinner

So today I cooked dinner for my fiance’ and myself. On the menu was Baked chicken,  potatoes,  mac and cheese, and biscuits. Unfortunately I did not make any veggies. my fiance’ really doesn’t like them too much so i have a hard time making well rounded meals that we can both eat and not waste the food.

To create this meal for your own friends or family all you need is :

one package boneless skinless chicken breast (preferably all natural) Usually there is three breasts in one package we usually eat one and then split the other it’s just enough!

Five or six russet potatoes- you have to peel and cut them up into diced pieces

bisquick mix

macaroni (elbows or shells)

some cheddar cheese and Monterrey jack and velveeta

and seasonings to taste

It was delicious and we were so full when we finished eating.

later i made an apple jelly cake Yummy!

please e-mail for any recipes or questions.

Plagiarism

In the Napster article, parts of the “plagiarism, academic honesty, and the new digital ethic” section really stuck out to me. The author says that “the ultimate aim of writing lies in its ethical effects: to improve society, inform individuals, expand knowledge, and assists communities”.  If most colleges saw writing as this, I think the rules about plagiarism would be a lot less strict. It is only fair that if you take a quote or hard facts from a source, that you give credit to the author.  But I have always thought that citing a source in a paper because you borrow an authors idea or view point is kind of ridiculous. People are not just born with opinions.  They must be exposed to different situations and different view points in order to shape their own.  People do not go around telling people “I believe that abortion should be illegal” and then go on to give credit to any one or anything that has convinced them.  If the purpose of writing is to better society and give people more knowledge, then once we receive that knowledge, it is also ours. The facts that we read or hear play a part in our opinion making and they become OUR ideas too.

First Observation

This past Tuesday, on September, 25, i began my observations for my inquiries to teaching class. I was placed in a kindergarten classroom in Logan Twp. The class i will be in for this semester had eighteen students. My time there was from 8:30am-11:30am and while I was there I observed many different things that took place. This teachers classroom was decorated with many colors and all different artwork that the students made. Her classroom was lively and fun however, she had control over the class and they listened to her very well. In the beginning of the class they came in and had circle time and went over everything from the calender to how many students wanted to buy lunch today. They did many different small tasks. However, for kindergartners these small tasks added up and took up about an hour of their day. Next, they had their special, which was music class, and they walked politely down the hall to the classroom for music. While they were there the teacher set up snack time and literacy time. Then, the students came back and had snack then they washed their hands and sat in lines on the carpet. It was now time for literacy and they practiced saying full sentences, telling where capital letters go, and putting punctuation at the end of their sentences. Then the teacher read a book and the class discussed words that rhymed. By the time all of this was over it was 11:30am and time for me to leave. I was shocked at how they did so many little tasks that ended up taking three hours.

Internet Plagiarism

Internet plagiarism is a widely growing problem in today’s society. As Rebecca Moore Howard states, “the internet makes texts readily available for plagiarizing.” This quote is very true, students can find almost any assignment online. Because of this, teachers and professors have been coming up with more original assignments so that it is more difficult for students to find papers exactly on their topic. However, students can still plagiarize different parts of their assignments. As Howard states in her paper, there are over 200 “cheat sites” and a billion other pages. Having so many sites available, means that almost any topic can be found online and students will be able to find a few sites and combine information. Even though, some students understand that what they are doing is plagiarism there are others who do not actually think that combining other people’s thoughts and writing their name on the paper is plagiarism. Therefore, i do not think that we can only blame the internet on the increase in plagiarism. The internet does provide entire written papers for students and this has made plagiarism increase. But, students need to be taught more about plagiarism in school before they begin writing papers on their own.

Scrapbooking

In todays society, scrapbooking can be interpreted into many different things. It ranges from digital scrapbooking, to black and white scrapbooking, to even collages. I have personally never made an online scrapbook, however it does sound interesting. But, I do have many different scrapbooks from all different parts of my life. I like to work on my scrapbooks before i go to bed, while I’m watching television, or when i have nothing else to do. I also think that scrapbooks are a great gift idea because they are so personal. However, scrapbooking can be a very expensive hobby. But, on here i will share some of my tips about how I scrapbook with out spending too much money. The craft store, A.C.Moore has the best sales on scrapbooking supplies. I only buy scrapbooks, paper, or stickers, when they are on sale. There are also different websites that have good deals on scrapbooking supplies like the scrapbooking warehouse, the scrapbook clearance site, and the scrapbook place. And i feel that the best place to develop digital pictures is Walmart. Their send out service is only 12 cents a picture and sometimes they also have sales. These are just a few tips on how to spend less money when making a scrapbook.

So much research!It’s everywhere!

Advertising is such a research based career. If you like to investigate and do research, then advertising is the career for you. When most people think oh advertising they think of commercials, and bill-boards. It is so much more than that. Companies are now spending billions of dollars on Advertising, and a huge chunk of that money is delegated to research. Companies like coke, pepsi-co, and Toyota would not be as profitable as they are today if it were not for the advetising dollars they spent to do consumer research and find out exactly what the people want. Companies are studying us, they like to know all profiles and what makes individuals tick. They want to maximize their profits so they tend to really try to cater to the needs of each consumer. It’s crazy when you think about it, but it works. Just about everything we do or see on a daily basis is some form of advertising. It’s everywhere!

Cooking is quite simple as long as you know the basics. Making most meals beigns with a preparation –larn ge or small. I am a fabulous cook. I think that cooking is a great way to express your creativity and it is very functional (everyone has to eat). My favorite things to make are spaghetti with turkey meatballs, chicken, and mashed potatoes! In my cooking blogs I would like to help everyone to understand the joys of cooking and find your inner chef!

Lonely Girl

The man who created LonleyGirl grew up without regular tv and he rarely watches it now. “But the series he created shows that Internet TV has arrived. The phenomenon is partly driven by technology – Lonelygirl15 wouldn’t exist without the explosion of broadband and the advent of YouTube”

I feel that this is very true. There is a huge explosion of broadband and YouTube users. People can watch almost any show that is on tv, on the internet. Some channels have even come up with shows that are made just to be put on the internet. And anyone can post onto YouTube. People put up all kinds of videos about almost everything. Technology plays a big part in our everyday life and we would not be anywhere with out it.
